Energy efficiency:
Installing underfloor insulation can save you a lot of CO2 each year. For a three-bedroom semi-detached home, it could save 190 kg of CO2 each year. That’s about the same amount of CO2 that the average UK household produces using electricity every month.
Here’s a breakdown of savings by property type:

Two-bedroom terraced house | 120 kg |
Three-bedroom semi-detached | 190 kg |
Four-bedroom detached | 310 kg |
Detached bungalow | 330 kg |
(Energy Saving Trust. Based on 2024 fuel prices).
Average installation time:
1-3 days
Is underfloor insulation right for my house?
Underfloor insulation is suitable for most homes in York and it works especially well in bungalows. It can be added to suspended timber floors and solid concrete floors. This helps to keep your home warmer by stopping heat from escaping through the floor. If you have high heating bills, underfloor insulation could be a great solution.
Approximate cost saving:
Savings will depend on the size of your home, the type of floor you have and your energy prices. A three-bedroom semi-detached home could save around £60 each year, while a four-bedroom detached could save up to £100 each year.
(Energy Saving Trust. Based on July 2024 fuel prices).
The cost to install underfloor insulation can vary and is based on a few factors:
The size of your home.

How does Underfloor insulation work?
Underfloor insulation works by adding special materials on or under your floor, like fluffy wool or foam panels. These materials stop heat from escaping through the floor. You can't see the insulation because it's hidden under your floorboards or solid floor, so your home looks just the same.

How does underfloor insulation work?
Underfloor insulation works by putting special materials on or under your floor. There are two ways this can be done:
Suspended floor insulation: soft and fluffy materials like mineral wool and PIR high-performance insulation (a type of plastic) are placed between the wooden beams under your floor.
Solid floor insulation: solid materials like foam panels are put on top of your concrete floor or it can also be excavated and thick panels of insulation added with a screed over the top.
Both materials act as a barrier that stops the heat from escaping. This means you can enjoy a cosy and warm home, all year round.

What does underfloor insulation look like and where does it fit in your house?
Suspended floor insulation tends to be soft and fluffy like wool. This fills the gaps between your timber floor.
Solid floor insulation works a little differently. Hard and firm panels of insulation are placed on top of your existing concrete floor.
Both types of underfloor insulation are hidden under your floor, so very little space is needed and you won’t notice them.
Installing underfloor insulation is also an opportune time to address draughts through the floors and junction with the walls helping you have a warmer home.
